United Park City Mines owns and operates one of the last remaining mineral extraction sites in Park City Utah. In 1997 UPCM’s CEO Hank Rothwell approached Ecosign to undertake resort planning for their lands. James completed this project for Ecosign while studying architecture at the University of Oregon.
Working with senior management of Deer Valley Resort, Four Seasons Resorts and UPCM, James envisioned and designed a resort village located high above above Park City and Deer Valley. The resort’s lodges are modelled after the great National Parks Style Architecture of the 1920s. The village is accessed via Gondola from Park City and connects that ski area with Deer Valley.
The buildings create a sheltered village commons complete with a central water feature/ skating rink.
The solar orientation was studied in detail to ensure solar access to all of the resorts pedestrian spaces. The building’s massing and architectural modulation is a direct result of our solar analysis.
